How to source tech talent without a LinkedIn Recruiter seat

A Recruiter seat is useful. It is not a prerequisite for a first pass. If the commercial search is capped, too expensive for a $55/hour contract, or you do not have a license this quarter, you still have Google, a Boolean string, and the candidate’s public web.

What you lose without the seat — and what you do not

  • You lose — InMail, saved projects, current-company filters, and Recruiter-only fields.
  • You keep — public profiles, GitHub, speaker lists, and any site Google indexed.
  • You should not invent — a second theory of the req. Same must-haves as if you had the seat.

This is not “LinkedIn Recruiter alternatives.” The seat and X-Ray are two doors. LinkedIn Recruiter vs Google X-Ray is the split. This page is the no-seat workflow.

A no-seat sourcing order

  • Read the JD. If you cannot say the role in one line, do not search yet.
  • Generate one Boolean core and a Google wrapper with Boolean & X-Ray. Typical line: site:linkedin.com/in/ (“Backend Engineer” OR “Java Developer”) AND “Spring Boot” AND Dallas.
  • Open the profile. Read the last two roles. Google rank is not seniority.
  • Reach out from a free LinkedIn account, email, or GitHub — one specific ask. Draft the note after you have a reason.

Buy the seat when you will work a named-account list for weeks or you need InMail more than you need another Boolean. Until then, keep one string and run it where the people are actually visible.
